Employers Look For a Career "Fit" in Potential New Hires

Top Recruiters offer their advice to candidates looking to stand out in the pack of prospective hires.

PORTLAND, OR (PRWEB) June 7, 2006 –- The interview is more than a time to determine if the candidate is a potential fit for the current position, according to a recent poll of employers and recruiters by http://CareerExposure.com. An overwhelming majority of respondents stated they are looking for a career fit – someone who can step in and contribute to the organization immediately, while at the same time offering a potential for long-term development.

“Today’s employers are looking for more than the ‘basics’ in their interviews,” said JillXan Donnelly, president of the Career Exposure Network. “Although a candidate’s skill set, experience and education are very important, employers need to feel their potential new hires want to do more than merely collect a paycheck. Recruiters tell us they are looking for new recruits to step in and contribute immediately.”

To determine career fit in potential hires, employers report the essential qualifications for a successful candidate are education, experience and professionalism. The candidates must also be goal-oriented, hard working and flexible to adapt to ever-changing business needs.

Over 65% of respondents to the poll stated they interview anywhere from five to 10 candidates for each position they are looking to fill. And, almost 30% of respondents interview more than 10 candidates.

Employers who responded to the survey offered their advice to candidates looking to stand out in the pack of prospective hires. Their top four tips include:

1. Be Prepared. Make sure you visit the company’s website and have thoroughly read through the job description, and be ready to show how your experience and skill set makes you the ideal person for the job.
2. Be Enthusiastic. Show a genuine interest by preparing and asking questions about the company and the position at hand, and take notes during the interview.
3. Be Professional. Your resumes should be as crisp and clean as your suit. Take a second to collect your thoughts before answering a question to ensure your response is eloquent and to the point.
4. Be Thankful. Just because the interview is over, that doesn’t mean it’s time to race out of the building and wait by the phone. Take the time to shake your interviewer’s hand and thank him or her for the opportunity to meet. Be sure to follow-up with thank you – either by email or written note -- to reaffirm your interest in the opportunity.
