Marvin Q. Lam, born in Saigon, Vietnam, in 1960, showed a keen interest in religion and spirituality by age 16. He studied yoga and meditation while experiencing first-hand the devastation of war in his homeland. Sponsored in 1975 by a Lutheran Church in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, his family came to America where Lam earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Iowa State University and later worked in genetics research.
