Tandem Cycle Works, a Unique Tandem Bicycle Retailer, Celebrates 10th Anniversary

Tandem Cycle Works, located in Denver, Colorado is marking a milestone as they celebrate their tenth anniversary in business this July. The only true tandem bike shop in the United States, shop owners Patrick Gibbons and Lynn Dexter attribute success to their highly specialized focus and love of the sport of tandem cycling.

Denver, Colorado (PRWEB) June 16, 2006 -- Tandem Cycle Works, located in the cycling Mecca of Denver, Colorado, is the only store in the country to sell tandems exclusively. Tandems are what they do… all they do.

When Tandem Cycle Works was founded ten years ago, shop owners, and husband and wife tandem team Patrick Gibbons and Lynn Dexter had one goal in mind — create a retail environment where tandems were the focus, not an afterthought. “Most bike shops have one or two tandems on the showroom floor and that’s it,” said Gibbons. “We have more tandem bikes in our store than in all the other bike shops in the Rocky Mountains combined,” Gibbons noted. Tandem Cycle Works inventory typically includes anywhere from forty to sixty tandems. This means selection for customers and a knowledge of these bikes simply not available elsewhere. Current inventory is up substantially from 1996 when the store opened with six tandem bicycles on the floor.

Retail is much more than products sales and inventory, however, and Gibbons and Dexter attribute their success to their love of “tandeming” and sharing this with their customers. “Each year we invite our customers to ride with us on events organized through the shop,” said Dexter. Varying from day rides in the Denver area to 3-day weekend rides in Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico, each year the events increase in popularity and this helps grow the sport. “Our annual Memorial Day 3-day ride grew to more than fifty tandem teams this year,” noted Dexter. “We not only sell tandem bikes, we also create opportunities for our customers to ride them.” In August Gibbons and Dexter will lead a trip with twelve tandems on a two-week bicycle tour in Ireland. Thus it would appear that as Tandem Cycle Works has grown, so has the sport of tandem cycling.

The shop is without question the sole and premier place to buy tandem bikes in the United States. “There is not another retail bike shop like ours in existence in the U.S. or elsewhere,” says Dexter. “Sure there are other places to find tandems for sale. But these are big bike stores with a few tandems in their huge inventories, and tandem bike sales are simply part of the one-stop shopping approach. We have found that most seeking to buy a tandem are looking for much more than this.”

High quality tandem bicycles range in price from $2,000 to more than $10,000. Given the high degree of product knowledge available at the shop and on the website, Tandem Cycle Works customer base now reaches from coast–to-coast and extends to Europe. Unlike ten years ago, many of their current sales begin with the internet as customers find Tandem Cycle Works’ website and then initiate e-mail contact or a phone call. “We don’t sell on the web,” said Gibbons. “The goal with our website is to have potential buyers find us, contact us, and learn that they have reached true tandem experts with whom they can feel confident making their purchase.”

Given the increase in internet usage and continued rise in sales via the web, along with an established ten year history in business, Tandem Cycle Works looks forward to making their next ten years even more successful.
