Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning "I Am My Own Wife" Will Feature Malcolm Tulip at Performance Network

Directed by Gillian Eaton, "I Am My Own Wife" by Doug Wright featuring Malcolm Tulip will be produced at Performance Network Theatre’s intimate 139-seat Theatre July 20, 2006 through August 27. As the final production of the theatre's 2006-07 season, the celebrated one-man show is an astonishing true-life tale of the will to survive. This production is sponsored by Between The Lines.

Ann Arbor, MI (PRWEB) June 16, 2006 -- From the author of "Quills" comes the celebrated 2004 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning smash hit, which explores the astonishing true story of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf. A publicly “out” transvestite in Germany in the 1940’s, she successfully navigated decades of oppression; from the Nazi onslaught, to the Communist regime, to the rise of Neo-Nazism. Ironically, von Mahlsdorf was both hailed as a cultural hero and accused of colluding with the Stasi. In an attempt to discern the truth about Charlotte, Doug Wright has crafted “a spectacular story, beautifully written.” (New York Times). Malcolm Tulip portrays more than 40 characters in a tour-de-force production, directed by Gillian Eaton.

Doug Wright won a 2004 Pulitzer Prize ("Wife" is the first one-actor play to win the Pulitzer), a Tony Award for Best Play, the Drama Desk Award, a GLADD Media Award, an Outer Critics Circle Award, a Drama League Award and a Lucille Lortel Award for "I Am My Own Wife". He is also author of "Quills", which brought him the Obie and Kesselring Awards. He went on to write the screenplay adaptation for the film "Quills" that was named best picture by the National Board of Review and was nominated for three academy awards.

Malcolm Tulip is an actor, director, playwright and teacher. At Performance Network he has directed "Mrs. Shakespeare: The Complete Works", "Humble Boy", "The Threepenny Opera", "Man of La Mancha", Timothy Findlay’s "Elizabeth Rex", Yasmina Reza’s "Art", Steve Martin’s "Picasso at the Lapin Agile", "Private Eyes" by Stephen Dietz and "The Caretaker" by Harold Pinter. He has also directed "The Merry Wives of Windsor" at the Michigan Shakespeare Festival. He has also has written, produced and performed in eight original plays under the name of Prospero Theatre Co. including the award-winning "Down the Plughole". He is an Assistant Professor and Head of the Directing Concentration in the Department of Theatre and Drama at the University of Michigan and Drama where he teaches Physical Theatre, Acting, Clown and Directing and where he has directed "The Diary of a Scoundrel", "The Imaginary Invalid", "The Good Person of Szechwan", "Lysistrata" and "The Visit". As an actor he has toured extensively in Europe and the USA. More recently, in the U.S. he has performed at The Performance Network, The Purple Rose, the New Jersey and Michigan Shakespeare Festivals. Malcolm studied Dance and Art at Goldsmiths’ College, University of London and is a graduate of L’École Jacques Lecoq, Paris. He is also a member of American Actors Equity.

Gillian Eaton is an award winning actress, director and teacher with extensive credits in theatre, film and television on both sides of the Atlantic. In 2005, she was honored with The Detroit Free Press award for Distinguished Contribution to Theatre and ArtServe Michigan’s prestigious E. Ray Scott Michigan Artist Prize. She is a graduate of the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and is a free-lance director and teacher of Shakespeare in performance. Her one-woman show was recently nominated for Best New Play by the Detroit Free Press.
Gillian has worked extensively in London’s West End including Steven Berkoff’s "Greek", "Fashion" by Doug Lucie, and "Don't Dress For Dinner" by Marc Camoletti (also World Tour) and also with The Royal Shakespeare Company in Peter Brook’s production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (World Tour).
In America she has worked at The Mark Taper Forum and Ahmanson Theatres in Los Angeles, La Jolla Playhouse and The Old Globe in San Diego and Center Repertory in San Francisco. She has been a guest theatre artist for numerous organizations including Wayne State University, Eastern Michigan University, University of Michigan, the Prison Creative Arts Project, Flint Youth Theatre, the Detroit Zoo and the Detroit Historical Museum.
