WCA Joins NETCompetition.org to Protect Innovation from 'Net Neutrality' Regulation

The Wireless Communications Association International (WCA) announced today that it has joined NetCompetition.org -- an e-forum to promote a debate on the merits of net neutrality regulation.

Washington, D.C. (PRWEB) June 16, 2006 -- To promote growth and innovation in advanced communications over broadband wireless, the Wireless Communications Association International (WCA) announced today that it has joined NetCompetition.org www.netcompetition.org -- an e-forum to promote a debate on the merits of net neutrality regulation.

“With spectrum a scarce and expensive resource, it is imperative that wireless broadband providers remain free to manage their own networks” commented WCA President Andrew Kreig. “Net neutrality regulation would discourage innovation and investment in more competitive broadband choices to all Americans. Our member companies are investing heavily in WiMAX or other ‘4G’ types of next generation broadband competitive alternatives. Our companies are part of the competitive solution, not part of the regulatory problem.”

NETCompetition Chairman Scott Cleland commented, “We’re pleased that the association of next-generation wireless broadband companies is equally concerned that net neutrality regulation would discourage innovation and investment in broadband and deny consumers additional broadband choices. More innovation and competition are the antidotes for net neutrality concerns, not backward-looking government-micromanagement.”

Cleland has been added to a previously scheduled discussion of the topic to be held June 27 at WCA 2006, WCA’s annual convention at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC. The pro-and-con session will be moderated by Wall Street Journal Reporter Amy Schatz, who has covered the issue extensively. Other speakers include Amazon.com Vice President for Global Public Policy Paul Misener and Dr. Hal J. Singer, president of a consulting firm Criterion Economics. Technical and policy background will be provided, respectively, by Bechtel Engineering & Technology Principal Vice President & CTO J.S. (Jake) MacLeod, and Stifel Nicholaus & Co., Inc. Vice President Rebecca Arbogast.
