Fabric Coordination is Easier Than Many Think

Interior design secrets that will create an intricate room that looks professionally designed. With the help of an online fabric store providing a simple way to find complementary patterns and finishes.

(PRWEB) June 20, 2006 -- When it comes to interior design, many people feel comfortable mixing one fabric pattern with a solid, but they are afraid of adding more. A tip: adding even one more patterns can make the difference between a so-so room and one that is interesting, polished, and pulled together. Never fear: here are some easy things to remember when you design your perfect room.

The important thing is to begin with a fabric in a pattern that you love, since that will set the tone for your overall decorating scheme. Your inspiration fabric will be featured prominently in your room, and should have at least 3 colors. Then select two or more additional fabrics, each featuring at least one of the colors in your inspiration fabric. Try to vary the fabrics so that contrast, texture, scale, sheen, and pattern vary. Experiment with different swatches until you find a grouping that balances color, scale, and pattern, and most importantly, is pleasing to you. You want to ensure that all of your fabrics coordinate, but also have noticeable differences.

Once you select your fabrics, you need to plan where you will use them. It is best to spread your fabrics around to create balance. If you use, say, a large floral fabric for your drapery, put smaller touches of it elsewhere, such as throw pillows or a headboard. Your second fabric, maybe a stripe, could be used predominantly as a duvet cover, and then more subtly for window shades, or to upholster a chair. Your third fabric, perhaps a luxurious solid linen, can be used as an accent in window treatments, shams, throw pillows, or a second chair.

The online designer fabric store, iLuvFabrix.com, makes it even easier. They provide a fabric matches feature which allows you to easily test possible fabric combinations by putting your preferred fabrics beside each other. This way you are able to mix and match your fabrics.

Don't forget to experiment with the colour and patterns of your walls and floor coverings; you could substitute a wall covering for one of your fabrics, or treat it as a fourth element in your pattern mix. Remember, these are guidelines, not rules, and are meant to help you build the confidence and skills to create the room of your dreams. Whatever direction you take, remember to experiment and have fun!
