Oil Dependency and Gas Prices Prompt Legislative Proposal

The price at the pump and a skyrocketing increase in demand for foreign oil has lead to a legislative proposal by an American citizen that is creating a groundswell of support.

Alamo, CA (PRWEB) June 26, 2006 -- The high cost of importing foreign oil has many Americans choosing between filling their cars with gas and filling their refrigerators with food and has lead to a demand for legislators to resolve the oil crisis.

“I can’t afford to fill my tank every week, it’s just crazy,” Joseph Melillo, 35, Island Heights, NJ explains. “My gas bill each month is almost double my car payment, I have no idea what to do,” Melillo continues.

As legislators grapple with the problem in the shadow of upcoming, important elections some citizens are taking the matter into their own hands. “While $3 for a gallon of gas is already a hardship for most Americans, my fear is that this is only the beginning. If we continue to allow foreign governments to control our supply of oil , it will only be a matter of time until we see prices well above $5 a gallon,” Mark Geist, Alamo, CA explains, “And this doesn’t begin to address the political ramifications of allowing unstable foreign governments to have a gun to your head.”

Geist, a retired businessman with a keen understanding of economics and business recently launched a website which proposes a sweeping solution to the nation’s dependence on foreign oil.

“The proposal is far-reaching, yet simple. In the end everyone wins including the U.S. oil companies,” Geist explains. “At first the oil companies will fight the legislation, but when the opportunity is recognized they will see tremendous upside, while at the same time helping the nation solve one of its most significant political and economic problems,” Geist continues.

With a groundswell of support, Geist has started an online petition with the ultimate goal of having at least 500,000 electronic signatures before the end of the year. “As a nation we must come together to solve this problem. We need to accept responsibility for our own future and meet the challenge before us head on,” Geist states, “When we are successful at replacing foreign oil with alternative energy sources, we will not only provide a stable source of affordable energy , but will create new industries, new job opportunities and help support a healthy, vibrant and growing U. S. economy.”

As legislators grapple with the oil crisis and significant political heat, the proposal by Geist has received some attention on both sides of the aisle. With the political firestorm already in full swing, politicians may begin to look at this grass roots effort as a resolution to the increasing foreign oil dilemma.
