Renegade Theatre Experiment Unleashes The Pornozombies Onto The World
With zombies all the rage, Renegade Theatre puts its own spin on the craze with the World Premiere of The pornozombies! Citing Reefer Madness, Plan 9 from Outer Space, and Dawn of the Dead as tonal inspirations, playwright Matt Casarino lets loose a comically fearful maelstrom of violence and sexuality on a conservative fantasyland of decent, all-American values.

Citing Reefer Madness, Plan 9 from Outer Space, and Dawn of the Dead as tonal inspirations, playwright Matt Casarino lets loose a comically fearful maelstrom of violence and sexuality on a conservative fantasyland of decent, all-American values.
It all starts when a mad scientist plans to bring love and happiness to us all by reanimating the dead to perform free-loving sex acts. When bumbling Detective Karla Lumpkins—a latter-day Jane Friday—is traumatically exposed to zombie porn, she rededicates herself to bringing the mad scientist to justice. In the process, she lays waste to civil rights and endangers her fellow citizens without developing an exit strategy. Only in a comedy…right?
Artistic director Sean C. Murphy has personally taken the reins of The Pornozombies, as the show’s director. “In order to value and protect the American Way, we must know what it is, and The Pornozombies shines its spotlight on this question. If we prevent certain behaviors or limit free speech, are we free? The hero demonstrates brute force and a clear disregard for the law. The bad guy wants a world without violence. The play highlights these conflicts with tongue firmly planted in cheek.”
As outrageous as it sounds, Casarino laughs at how his play is surprisingly tame, even “chaste”. He pokes fun at horrors that are much worse in the imagination than ever seen on stage. But even amidst its giddy teases, The Pornozombies satirizes the hypocrisies of today’s political arguments and the standard of acceptable violence versus shameful sexuality. Plus, it’s damn funny.
The Pornozombies previews on July 13th, and runs July 14th-29th at the Historic Hoover Theater in San Jose. Performances begin at 8:00pm, except Sunday matinees which are at 2pm. Tickets for The Pornozombies are $18.00 General Admission (Thursdays and Sundays) and $20.00 General Admission (Fridays and Saturdays). Students and teachers, seniors, and Theatre Bay Area members qualify for discount tickets ($13.00 Thu/Sun & $15.00 Fri/Sat) with valid ID.
