'Live! At KRE 2006' Celebrates Radio Day by the Bay

"Open house" for 1930s-era radio station renovated into broadcasting museum.

Berkeley, CA (PRWEB) July 8, 2006 -- On Saturday, July 15, the California Historical Radio Society (CHRS) will be holding its annual "Live! At KRE" public event on the grounds of the old KRE radio station building near Aquatic Park in Berkeley.

Although thousands of Bay Area commuters pass by the old radio station every day -- you can't miss the 400-foot tower off Interstate 80 at Ashby Avenue -- only a few have had a chance to look inside. Now, CHRS has renovated the nearly 70-year-old building into a broadcasting museum, filled with vintage radios, televisions and studio equipment, as well as a working amateur radio station, radio repair shop and broadcasting library.

Bay Area radio legend Carter B. Smith (KSFO, KABL) will host the event, which will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 15. Also on hand will be members of local radio's famed Broadcast Legends (www.BroadcastLegends.com) plus live bands, an auction and flea market featuring antique radios, tours of the KRE building and an Edison Cylinder concert. Admission is $5 for adults; children under 12 are admitted at no charge.

For the record, the old KRE building continues to house the transmitters for two local AM stations, and George Lucas filmed the scenes featuring Wolfman Jack in "American Graffiti" at the station.

CHRS President Steve Kushman, who spearheaded the KRE renovation project, is available for interviews, photographs and media tours in the week leading up to the event. In addition to his role with CHRS, Steve is a news editor at KGO-TV (Channel 7) in San Francisco.
