Challenges Dedicated to Changing Misconceptions of Alcoholism

Most people still believe that Alcoholism is a moral weakness however, recent studies show that it is, in fact, a physical addiction. It is this misconception that hinders those in need from seeking treatment and recovery services.

Fort Lauderdale, FL (PRWEB) July 13, 2006 -- According to the Community Anti-Drug Coalition of America most Americans still perceive alcoholism as a moral weakness. However, recent studies have shown that alcohol addiction is, in fact, a physical addiction. The negative connotations of the disease in America prevent many addicts from seeking alcholism treatment. One in every ten Americans that consume alcohol suffers from alcoholism and of these 15 million, only about 150,000 seek treatment.

Challenges Relapse Treatment & Prevention Center is a JCAHO Accredited treatment facility specializing in Relapse Prevention and Relapse Treatment. Challenges’ Director of Clinical Outreach, Lori Fischer, believes that the stigmas attached to alcohol addiction are to blame for so few seeking treatment, “Americans do have misconceptions about the physical and psychological dependencies associated with alcohol addiction. Alcoholism is a treatable physical condition; however, the generally accepted theory is that it is simply a moral and character flaw.”
