This invention replaces using the “lamp shade” collar on animals with leg injuries. It’s a lined, waterproof leg covering that securely straps up around an animal’s body allowing for blood and air flow to facilitate healing, called The Strock™, which is a combination of the words “strap sock” (patent pending).
When Townshend’s beloved Bichon-Maltese mix, Buddy, hurt one paw and was heading for infection by licking it so much, she was determined to create something less restrictive than that collar to keep Buddy mobile and comfortable while his paw was healing. The Strock™ worked perfectly and everyone that saw it, told Townshend they wanted The Strock™ for their own animals instead of using the restrictive collar.
Although Townshend didn’t make it all the way to the finals on that show, she left her job with corporate America and started Best Buddy™ Pet Products, Inc. when sales of The Strock™ began to spread like wildfire. “This entire experience has been such an incredible education in what it takes to become a true entrepreneur because I’ve had to learn about patenting, financing, business structure and marketing, all of which I had little to no background.” Townshend says, “These days, I favor the services and products of other small companies whenever possible because it keeps me motivated and inspired seeing others succeeding since I understand the challenges they have faced”.
When it became time to get some financing, Townshend tried the conventional process of getting a small business loan or cash flow credit line through her bank. When they turned her down because of past credit blemishes and no company track record yet established, she heard about a new “person-to-person” lending forum on the internet called “Prosper.com” and decided to give it a try. Through some trials and tribulations, Townshend secured a loan after 23 days of having 3 separate loan requests on the Prosper.com forum. Unbeknownst to Townshend at the time, a reporter from Inc. Magazine had been following her loan progress on the website and called to interview her the day after her funding was obtained. Although the reporter originally said the article was to be about Prosper.com, it became more in depth into her story in the article, which will be appearing in the August 2006 issue.
