Shielding Lotion As Anti-Aging and Dry Skin Treatment May Help With Summer Dehydration

Dermatologists caution summer heat and active lifestyle may contribute to dehydration of skin and body.
Most people think of the winter as the time to moisturize because the air is dryer, but our skin really benefits from moisturizing year round

BEVERLY HILLS, CA (PRWEB) July 18, 2006 -- Summer is here and any dermatologist will tell you the risk of dehydration to both the body and to skin is much greater. According to the most recent statistics from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), more than 4,780 people have died from heat related causes from 1979-2002. On average, approximately 300 people die each year from exposure to heat.

Although most people don’t reach the acute dehydration stage requiring hospitalization or resulting in morbidity, summer heat and activities can still take their toll on the skin causing dehydration-related dry skin and aging. A dermatologist-recommended shielding lotion, along with increased water, electrolyte, and mineral intake can improve the hydration of both the body and skin.

“Dehydration comes from within mostly, so you have to make certain that you get enough fluids and minerals with those fluids,” says Dr. Lisa Benest, a dermatologist with a successful practice in Burbank, Calif. “In addition to drinking water, take in natural things that have more minerals, like fruits and vegetables. The key is to get a good balance of those electrolytes and minerals, rather than just water and pills. You can drink a ton of water, but without the electrolytes, you can still be dehydrated.”

Using a shielding lotion can increase the skin’s ability to attract and retain moisture, leaving skin much healthier and younger looking. A recent moisture study found that the shielding lotion, Skin MD Natural, with its sheer elegant formula, showed a remarkable ability to increase its moisturizing properties over time, when compared to heavier, greasier creams and oils which had to be reapplied frequently.

“Most people think of the winter as the time to moisturize because the air is dryer, but our skin really benefits from moisturizing year round,” says Dr. Benest. “During the summer, people are doing water sports, taking more showers, wading in chlorinated in pools, all of these things dry out the skin more frequently and skin that is not dehydrated looks younger. A shielding lotion helps to minimize the water loss from the skin.”

She also cautions people with certain skin conditions, like eczema and ichthyosis or those with chronically dehydrated skin, to take greater care of their skin as they are more predisposed to dehydration. Letting the skin become too dehydrated causes many skin problems and makes any existing skin problem worse.

For dehydrated skin and body, using a quality shielding lotion, drinking plenty of water, and taking in natural sources of minerals and electrolytes is important. However, if you notice more severe signs of dehydration, such as disorientation, less frequent urination, or loss of elasticity when pinching the skin on the back of the hand, you are dehydrated and should seek immediate medical attention.
