Top Students and Young Professionals Selected for Competitive Global Health Internship Program
Six top students and young professionals from across the country were selected from a field of 400 applicants to participate in a highly-competitive pediatric global health program based in Philadelphia.
Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) July 22, 2006 -- Six top students and young professionals from across the country were selected from a field of 400 applicants to participate in a highly-competitive pediatric global health program with the Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children (FIMRC) this summer.
This marks the start of the 3rd Annual FIMRC Ambassador Program. The program provides an understanding of how the Foundation works to improve pediatric global health.
Although the positions are unpaid, the program’s incredible perk is that at the end of the summer up to three Ambassadors who have demonstrated the most effort and dedication will be awarded with a trip to one of FIMRC’s health care programs around the world.
According to FIMRC Chairman Vikram Bakhru, M.D., “All of these interns are highly motivated, and we are thrilled to have them on our team. I know they will make a real impact in helping us move forward with our mission.”
The Ambassadors will be performing a variety of tasks and include: helping to expand the chaptership program, assisting volunteers who are traveling in FIMRC’s Global Health Volunteer program, conducting research for various administrative projects, and of course, usual office tasks. Those who have advanced skills in public health will be of assistance to project managers at FIMRC’s project sites in Central America, Africa, or South Asia.
The Ambassadors are as follows:
Steffanie Bristol is working full-time at FIMRC’s health clinic in Alajuelita, Costa Rica. Stephanie received a highly-competitive Education Enrichment Award from the honors college at her university so she could learn first-hand about international health care. She is a student at Clemson University and is majoring in health science and her minor is business administration. She expects to graduate in 2007. During a recent study abroad in Swansea, Wales, she served as a Research Assistant for a physician and investigated medical errors in the United Kingdom and U.S.
Qian Cao is working on FIMRC’s dental program, Project Smiles for All. She is a pre-dental student at Brandeis University and is majoring psychology and his minor is East Asian studies. She expects to graduate in 2007. She is considering a career in dentistry and international healthcare, and she applied for the Ambassador program to learn more about public health. Last summer, she volunteered at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, in Newton, MA and interned at a dental office in Dec. 2005.
Shaun Desai is working on special projects and assisting with the Foundation’s operations. He is Shaun Desai is working on special projects and assisting with the Foundation’s operations. He is a student at The George Washington University (GWU) and he is enrolled in the Seven-Year Accelerated (BA/MD) Medical Program. In 2005, he received his B.A. in biology from GWU’s Columbian College. He expects to complete his M.D. program in 2008. Last year, Shaun performed clinical research as a Gill Research Fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He was also a research intern at the National Institutes of Health.
Katerina Foster is working on legal affairs matters. She is a recent graduate of the University of Wyoming (UW) College of Law. She gained valuable legal experience while volunteering in the area of family law at the UW Domestic Violence Legal Clinic. This opportunity enabled her to conduct legal research, interview clients and witnesses, and prepare trial and other legal documents. A native of the Czech Republic, she attended Anglo-American College (AAC) and received a L.L.B. degree in 2002. While at the AAC, she was selected for an internship program with the Czech Parliament.
Amy Hessing is working on special projects and assisting with the Foundation’s operations. She is a Registered Nurse in the Pediatric Oncology/Hematology ward at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. She is a 2005 graduate of Brigham Young University’s (BYU) College of Nursing. While at BYU, she spent a semester studying in Argentina and conducted research on the extrauterine growth in hospitalized infants and parental satisfaction in the newborn ICU. She applied for the Ambassador program because she has long had a deeply rooted compassion for children born into unfortunate circumstances. She chose to study nursing in college to learn a skill that could benefit this population.
Hannah Stein is working on FIMRC’s outreach projects. She is a full-time intern who is working directly with Chairman Vikram Bakhru, M.D. on the Foundation’s operations. She is a student at Cornell University and is a biology and society major and her minor is in nutrition and health, communication, and policy analysis and management. Hannah expects to graduate in 2007. She applied to the Ambassador program because she was thrilled to find the disciplines she most enjoys – health, communications, human rights, and law – available through FIMRC.
FIMRC, which is based in Philadelphia, is a 501(c)3 global non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for children by providing both direct and indirect medical support. Its foremost goal is to ensure that children in underserved communities have their basic medical needs met. This is accomplished through the following efforts: (1) fundraising for the construction of pediatric clinics in areas currently lacking a reliable source for health care; (2) directly influencing the health of children by encouraging and supporting individuals and groups who desire to travel to medically underserved areas of the world; and (3) encouraging future health leaders to become involved its mission by recognizing their achievements.
