CAES Applauds Senate Action on Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act

Vital energy legislation S. 3711 will allow safe access to American energy supplies on the outer continental shelf.

Washington, DC (PRWEB) July 21, 2006 -– The Consumer Alliance for Energy Security today issued the following statement after the filing of S. 3711, the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act, paving the way for Senate consideration of legislation that would safely access American energy supplies on the Outer Continental Shelf:

“We commend the U.S. Senate for deciding to consider S. 3711 next week and salute supporters for this critical step forward in the process. This legislation will help address America’s growing energy crisis.

“The United States is fortunate to have abundant domestic supplies of energy. Yet, for more than two decades federal policies have placed most of America’s energy supplies off-limits. Next week, the Senate can help reverse our outdated policies by providing greater access to American energy.

“Clearly, the leaders in the U.S. Senate recognize that guaranteed access to these energy supplies can help lower energy prices for consumers, reduce the burden on seniors, retain U.S. jobs, strengthen American competitiveness and enhance the nation’s energy security. Unlocking portions of the OCS can be done safely, and this legislation provides economic benefits to coastal states and important environmental programs like the Land and Water Conservation Fund.

“We strongly encourage Senators to support S. 3711 and pass the bill swiftly. A vote for this legislation is a vote for a stronger, more secure future for America.”

The Consumer Alliance for Energy Security is a broad-based coalition of consumers, industrial and institutional energy users committed to alleviating the current U.S. energy crisis by pushing for greater access to the abundant supply of domestic energy on the Outer Continental Shelf – OCS.
