Lessons Learned Through Children

In her new book, "They'll Teach You a Lesson," MaryAnn Aikins shares the lessons she has learned from children throughout her career.
Each chapter in the book is dedicated to a lesson Aikins learned and the child who taught her the lesson. They first chapter reveals how her godson and his sister approached daily occurrences and ordinary items with immense awe and wonder. She remebers how one day on the telephone, her godson exclaimed he had a knock-knock joke. When she asked the common "Who's there?" he met her question with a touching answer, "It's Noah, and I love you." Ordinary events such as doing the dishes, seeing weeds in the lawn and playing with rubber bands become exciting adventures when children are involved.
Some children Aikins encountered lived with less than ideal conditions including abusive parents, unfortunate diseases, developmental disabilities or extreme poverty. One child, Craig, taught Aikins that it isn't money that buys happiness, and that even the most poor can be happy if they are loved. Craig's family lived in an unsanitary home with holes in the roof and floor. His parents brought up four children in their crowded trailer, but the children seemed to be richer than all the others. Amid squalor, the children were taught that they were loved unconditionally, providing them with pride and identity.
"They'll Teach You a Lesson" is a heartwarming book that profits individual children with something special to teach adults who are ready to learn.
