The first Trefethen vintage was produced in 1973 by John and Janet Trefethen, though the property has a long and distinguished history. The original winery was built in 1886 and is one of Napa Valley’s only existing three-story, wooden, gravity-flow wineries – so historically distinctive and significant that the building is on the National Register of Historic Places. Eugene Trefethen purchased the ranch in 1968, when there were fewer than 25 wineries in the entire Napa Valley. John joined his father in replanting vines, and today John and Janet Trefethen continue to produce authentic wines of exceptional character that are classic yet contemporary.
Wine lovers and those who desire to learn more about wines can visit the winery for tasting or call ahead to plan a tour, both daily except on holidays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Visitors will immerse themselves in the beauty of wine country and its magnificent gardens and landscapes, learn how the winemaking process has evolved since the winery’s 19th century beginnings, and enjoy a distinctive tasting experience in the Trefethen Wine Library.
