The Wilmington Craft Mafia: The D.I.Y. Wise Guys are Taking Over Wilmington
Area crafty entrepreneurs are joining forces to share resources and educate consumers.
Wilmington, DE (PRWEB) August 13, 2006 -- Move over Sopranos, there is a new family in town—the family of the Wilmington Craft Mafia. Marone, you say? What is the Wilmington Craft Mafia? The Wilmington Craft Mafia is made up of independent artists and crafters who live in the Wilmington, Delaware, area. Part of the larger Craft Mafia syndicate, the Wilmington Craft Mafia is making the world a better place for the crafting Mafiosa.
With members hailing from Wilmington and Newark, Delaware, the Wilmington Craft Mafia hopes to take the crafting world by storm. The mission of the Wilmington Craft Mafia is to inspire, support, and promote the do-it-yourself crafter and artisan community in the area. The Wilmington Craft Mafia also aims to educate shoppers about the growing indie design movement. Many shoppers are frustrated with shopping at impersonal big-box stores, but don’t realize there are alternatives. Independent designers, crafters and artists make a variety of products ranging from functional to playful: silk-screened note cards, knitted notebook computer cozies, all sorts of bath products, handmade dolls, and jewelry just to name a few. Putting interested shoppers and crafters and designers in touch with one another is a major goal of the Wilmington Craft Mafia.
With jewelry pliers instead of Tommy guns as tools, the women of the Wilmington Craft Mafia plan on staging their own craft shows and other events in the area.
“As women and small-business owners, we see the benefits of supporting each other. This group is a great way to exponentially promote ourselves,” says Jen Wallace, one of the founders of the Wilmington Craft Mafia and the designer of Tilting Swiftly jewelry.
The Craft Mafia concept is not a new one, but was the brainchild of nine talented crafty ladies from Austin, Texas. Their original idea has grown and there are now Craft Mafias is most major metropolitan areas across the US.
