Gabrielle Staples started writing Situation Vacant in 1994 as an entry to a short story competition. 10,000 words later she realized that it wasn’t going to be ‘short’ and over the next years developed it into a full-length book. After the usual rejection slips she was taken on by an agent, however her experience with a publisher who took 12 months to reach the stage of a printers proof, and who went into liquidation on the eve of publication meant that the book never saw the light of day. Disillusioned, she put the manuscript back on the shelf until she saw an article about Lulu. The rest is history. She found Lulu’s print-on-demand tools to be fast and easy, and they gave her complete control of the publishing process. Gabrielle Staples was born in Hertford, England in 1951. Raised and educated in New Zealand she received a Bachelor of Commerce and Administration Degree from Victoria University of Wellington and qualified as a chartered accountant.
