Rho Gamma Gamma Chapter Omegas Award Six (6) $1000 Scholarships to Worthy Black High School Graduates

The men of Rho Gamma Gamma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. awarded six (6) $1000 scholarships to worthy black high school students. There was a banquet to honor them and their parents.

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) August 19, 2006 -- On August 10, 2006, the city of Chicago had been blanketed with rain. For some, this could be considered a very dreary day, but not for six (6) young black high school students. You see, Rho Gamma Gamma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. held a Scholars Banquet that was to honor the scholastic achievement of these six students at the wonderful “Captain Hard Times” 436 E. 79th Street Chicago, IL 60619-2820.

The scholarships are appropriately named after Corneal A Davis, a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Brother Davis was a state of Illinois Congressman, who served there for almost 40 years (1943-1979), and one of his main focal points was Education. So, there is a great history connected to the scholarships that we award.

Every year, the chapter attempts to award scholarships to high school student within the Chicagoland area. Melvin Jefferson, Jr., the chapter Basileus (President) spoke briefly explaining, “Rho Gamma Gamma has not always been able to provide scholarships, but, this year, we will provide six (6) scholarships again." You see, last year Rho Gamma Gamma provided six (6) scholarships to well deserving young black students, while in previous years four (4) high school students received the awards.

The young adults are judged based on an essay, high school grades, community service, and a few other essentials. Each student is awarded a $1000 Scholarship Award, which is given in two equal installments. The first $500 is given before the scholar attends college. Hence, the Scholars Banquet in August. This scholarship award is helpful for books and any other necessary last minute essential items. As a way to promote scholarship even more, each scholar must achieve a first semester grade point average of 2.5/4.0 or 3.5/5.0 in order to receive the second installment of $500.

Well, without further ado, I bring you Rho Gamma Gamma Chapter’s 2006 Scholarship Recipients:
Langston Wesley will be attending Stanford Univ.
Christian Cheairs will be attending Hampton Univ.
Rachel Gadson will be attending Florida A&M Univ.
Charles Beavers will be attending Howard Univ.
Marquise Austin will be attending Spellman Univ.
Erica Campbell will be attending Northern Illinois Univ.

The Scholarship Committee Chair, Steven Watkins had some wise words for the scholars. “Enjoy yourselves in college, but you must make sure you remember why you are there.” Committee member and Emcee, Kendall Franklin, made sure he brought forth the fact that “Scholarship” is our second Cardinal Principle. He followed with, “Scholarship is something we should all be committed to as human beings. Scholarship, simply put, is the perpetual pursuit of knowledge. And, the perpetual pursuit of knowledge is something that will last you throughout your entire lifetime.” This year the committee thought it would be best to award the parents of the scholars a token of appreciation for their dedication to scholarship excellence as well, which we hope will last a life time.
