Climate Change and Education: New TrainCLIM Software Provides Hands-On Experience

A new software package called TrainCLIM has just been released on the World Wide Web. The software enables a wide range of potential users from school teachers and students to environmentalists and local governments to gain a broader understanding of the real world implications of climate change to local areas and societies.

Hamilton, New Zealand (PRWEB) August 24, 2006 --A new software package called TrainCLIM has just been released on the World Wide Web. The software enables a wide range of potential users from school teachers and students to environmentalists and local governments to gain a broader understanding of the real world implications of climate change to local areas and societies. TrainCLIM is a software-supported training package. It consists of a hard-wired (as opposed to an open-framework) model and supportive manuals, training modules and exercises. For the purpose of training simulations, the models and materials are designed around fictitious places. Training modules are designed to expand peoples’ thinking through the integration of concepts that have both environmental and developmental ramifications in a climate changed world.

TrainCLIM is designed for two purposes: it introduces new users to the powerful modeling capacity of CLIMsystems products; and, by teaching through the use of a hands-on set of tools, important concepts required when assessing vulnerability to climate change and adaptation options can be quickly learned.

Exercises can be accessed from the CLIMsystems download page that permit the user to work through scenarios of climate change in order to rapidly gain understanding of the concepts and themes in vulnerability and adaptation assessments.

One need not be an expert in climate science to gain benefits from using TrainCLIM. The extensive on-line help assists people new to the field to quickly grow their knowledge base.

The Halava Islands, a fictitious island nation, is used as the vehicle for driving the concepts of climate change, variability and adaptation. This model has been used extensively, around the world, with great success.

The program also includes tools that can be applied globally such as the climate and sea level scenario generators.

We encourage individuals with an interest in climate change, lecturers involved in the teaching of climate and global environmental change, government departments tasked with understanding and planning for adaptation to climate change, and others to join the TrainCLIM family.

The program includes:

  • Global climate scenario generator
  • Global sea level scenario generator
  • Extreme events analysis tool
  • Climate data browser
  • Malaria epidemic potential tool
  • Dengue fever epidemic potential tool
  • Shoreline change model
  • Coastal inundation model
  • Tropical cyclone risk model
  • PlantGro agricultural potential model
  • River flow analysis and flooding model
  • Atoll freshwater lense model
  • Rainwater collection (tank size) model
  • Free access to an on-line users’ forum

The software can be downloaded and purchased on-line from http://www.climsystems.com/site/downloads/. Visit http://www.climsystems.com/site/home/ for information on all CLIMsystem’s product.
