Beijing, China (PRWEB) August 31, 2006
HarperCollins Publishers Worldwide President and CEO Jane Friedman today announced a series of new cooperative initiatives in China. They include the distribution of select Chinese works overseas, the publishing of Swordbird in the U.S., U.K. and China, and the launch of Cidian.cn, an online Collins English-Chinese dictionary.
The People’s Literature Publishing House
HarperCollins has signed a collaboration agreement with The People’s Literature Publishing House, with the full support of the General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP), calling for new and classical works by Chinese authors to be translated and published overseas. HarperCollins intends to work closely with a university in the U.S. with strengths in Chinese literature to develop this publishing program. Initially five Chinese classic titles will be published for the English speaking market.
“We are committed to working closely with China’s publishing industry and are excited by our partnership with The People’s Literature Publishing House,” said Ms. Friedman, who is in China to speak at the Beijing International Publishing Forum. “As a global publishing company, we see English translation of Chinese literary works as an under-served category and therefore an opportunity.
Commenting on the agreement, Liu Yushan, President of The People’s Literature Publishing House, said, “It is our goal to enable people around the world to appreciate and enjoy works of Chinese literature. Our cooperation with HarperCollins will enable this.”
Worldwide Launch of Swordbird
In addition to sharing classical works of literature, both HarperCollins and The People’s Literature Publishing House announced the publishing of Swordbird in the U.S., U.K. and China. The story, written by 12-year-old Nancy Yi Fan, a Chinese native, first came to the attention of HarperCollins when Nancy emailed her manuscript to Ms. Friedman. The book will be published in February 2007 in English by HarperCollins Children’s Books and in Chinese by The People’s Literature Publishing House.
New Free Online Dictionary Web site, http://www.Cidian.cn
As part of HarperCollins’ China program, Brian Murray, Group President, also announced the launch of Cidian.cn, an online Collins Dictionary service featuring a full English-Chinese translation dictionary and an English dictionary designed specifically for students learning English. These will provide comprehensive language resources, phraseology, language and cultural notes as well as thousands of translated examples. Appropriately named from the Chinese word for dictionary, Cidian.cn (pronounced “tsih di’en”) will enable users in China and globally to look up words, read translations, view corresponding entries and benefit from other advanced search functions.
“With more than 350 million Chinese consumers learning English, our goal is for Cidian.cn to become a leading dictionary destination on the Internet,” Murray said. The service will be available online to users worldwide at Cidian.cn, starting in October, 2006.
Stella Chou will oversee these initiatives in China. As managing director, Ms. Chou will be responsible for collaborating with various local partners and fostering stronger links between Western and Chinese cultures. Ms. Chou comes to HarperCollins from Children's Fun Publishing Company Ltd., a joint venture publishing company of Egmont in China, where she was managing director.
