Skin Care News Magazine Clarifies Why Sunscreen May Not Keep People Safe From UVA's Cancer Causing Effects

Skin care and sunscreen may not be enough to protect you from skin cancer and UVA rays, according to Skin Care News Magazine's latest article.

(PRWEB) September 4, 2006 --The use of sunscreen has always been regarded as a surefire way of protecting oneself from the harmful effects of the sun's rays. A new report, however, shows that no one is completely safe from the risk of skin cancer. Skincare-News.com's latest article, "Feel the Burn…Literally! What You Should Know About UVA Rays" shows readers that they can never let their guard down when out in the sun.

"Feel the Burn…Literally! What You Should Know About UVA Rays" highlights an important finding by the Taipei-based Environmental Quality Protection Foundation, which states that sunscreen use will protect against UVB but has no effect on preventing exposure to UVA rays. This finding is backed up by disturbing statistics, such as:

In the United States alone, more than one million people will be diagnosed with skin cancer this year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. You may be asking yourself how this can be possible when sun protection and skin care tips have been rampant in the media and advocated by dermatologists? Although the message is out there, there are still many who aren't taking the warnings seriously. According to the American Cancer Society, 70 percent of adult Americans do not use sun-protection.

What many people also aren't aware of is the difference between UVA and UVB rays. The article provides a simple explanation:

  • UVA rays: this long wave solar ray penetrates the skin deeply and is the main cause of wrinkling, leathering and other symptoms of "photoaging". When combined with UVB, UVA helps increase cancer-causing effects and is believed by experts to directly cause some skin cancers, such as melanoma.

  • UVB rays: When you get sunburn, UVB rays are the ones responsible. While UVB rays don't penetrate the skin as deeply as UVA rays, these short wave solar rays are the direct cause of sunburn and the main skin cancers, including basal and squamous cell carcinomas and melanoma.

Skincare and beauty expert Denise Carter says that many people are buying sunscreen without knowing what they're buying. "It's important to know that sunscreens with an SPF of 15 are already blocking 93% of UVB rays. People assume that buying a sunscreen with a higher SPF will better protect them from the sun and it's that kind of false assumption that is putting more people at risk for skin cancer."

Carter's article, "Feel the Burn…Literally! What You Need to Know About UVA rays", let's readers know that while they should continue to use sunscreen and sunblock, they should still adhere to all sun protection methods, like wearing protective clothing and staying out of the sun for prolonged periods of time.
