Eating Disorder Foundation of Orange County to Host Family Fun Hike

Fundraising hike to bring eating disorder awareness to Southern California.

Laguna Beach, CA (PRWEB) September 2, 2006 -- The Eating Disorder Foundation of Orange County will be hosting the 1st Annual Family Fun Hike on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2006. This 3.2 mile "novice" hike at Crystal Cove State Park in Laguna Beach will kick off the day's events at 8:00am and include a catered lunch, rock climbing wall, bounce houses, music, give-a-ways, and more. The event has been designed to include family members of all ages. All proceeds will go to eating disorder awareness and prevention.

The Eating Disorder Foundation of Orange County is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing prevention efforts, early detection, and education for our community on the realities of eating disorders. Eating disorders are conditions that cause a person to spend most of their waking hours thinking and obsessing about food, weight, calories, and/or body image. These obsessions may cause them to binge eat, starve themselves, or binge and purge.

10-15% of all Americans suffer from some type of eating disorder. These illnesses can last anywhere from 5-15 years or more. The longer the duration of the illness, the greater chance of death or severe, irreversible medical consequences. Eating disorders are progressive and can result in serious mental and physical illness and/or death.

Funds raised from the Family Fun Hike will help the Foundation continue to offer free presentations and resource referrals to local schools, parent groups, athletic organizations, and professional groups interested in preventing and detecting eating disorders. Programs already developed and implemented by EDFOC include "Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies," a curriculum developed specifically for Orange County schools. The Eating Disorder Foundation of Orange County also offers programs that provide funds for those who cannot afford the treatment they desperately need to begin their recovery. Event sponsors include: Insight Counseling, TNC New Media, Remuda Ranch, EndurancePlanet.com, Center for Discovery, and The Center for Change.

Advance registration is recommended. Tickets are $25 for adults, $10 for children ages 6-15, and free for children ages 5 and under. A special price for families of 4 is $50.00 prepaid. For more information please call Nicole Bourquin, Executive Director of EDFOC at (800) 342-9403 or visit www.edfoc.org for additional details. To register online, go to www.familyfunhike.org.
