Long Island Plastic Surgical Group Presents New Procedure. Better Long Term Results for Breast Lift and Augmentation Patients

Garden City, NY (PRWEB) September 11, 2006 -- Kaveh Alizadeh, M.D., F.A.C.S. from Long Island Plastic Surgical Group, presented his work on a novel technique in breast surgery at the 18th Congress of the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery meeting held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in August, 2006. “This presentation is based on our work over the past five years which examines the treatment of complications seen in combination breast lift (mastopexy) and breast augmentation surgeries as well as techniques that would help improve them,” stated Dr. Alizadeh.
Patients undergoing augmentation mastopexy often present with a small amount of breast tissue and noticeable stretching of the periareolar skin, often as a result of multiple births or massive weight loss. Many of these patients are unsatisfied with the procedure over time due to the conflict between the weight of the implant and the relaxation of the lower pole skin. This often results in the “bottoming out” effect of the implant. Patients may experience asymmetry of the nipples requiring secondary or tertiary corrections. The complications from these multiple breast surgeries can then led to further patient dissatisfaction.
Dr. Alizadeh, who treats a large population of women presenting for breast surgery, has developed algorithms to address the prevention of the undesired outcomes in augmentation mastopexy. In two papers presented at the conference, a series of 24 patients who had undergone corrections of augmentation mastopexy complications were studied and showed long term follow-up with good nipple position and breast shape.
Dr. Alizadeh also presented a novel technique that uses the patient’s own tissue to help support the implant over the long term. “Instead of throwing away the excess skin during the breast lift, we have developed a plastic surgical technique that utilizes this extra tissue to provide a hammock for the implant and provide a stable long term support for the breast tissues,” he stated.
