On 5th Anniversary of 9/11 Attacks, CD-5 Congressional Candidate Jay Fawcett Assesses Federal Progress on Global War on Terrorism
Fawcett uses military review process to analyze Homeland Security preparation and terrorist threat: On the eve of the Fifth Anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, Jay Fawcett, candidate for Congress in Colorado's 5th District, today spoke out on a question that is on the minds of many Americans: "Are we safer than we were five years ago?" COLORADO SPRINGS (PRWEB) September 9, 2006 -- On the eve of the Fifth Anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, Jay Fawcett, candidate for Congress in Colorado's 5th District, today spoke out on a question that is on the minds of many Americans: "Are we safer than we were five years ago?"
Fawcett, a decorated 20-year military veteran with extensive Homeland Security expertise, concludes that the federal government has failed to address many of the recommendations put forth by the 9/11 Commission, and it has lost focus on the core mission of the war on terrorism.
"As we prepare to mark the fifth anniversary of September the 11th, we should mourn the victims of this tragedy; reflect on where we have been as a country and move forward to improve Homeland Security and our handling of the global war on terror," said Fawcett, who was awarded a Bronze Star for his service in Operation Desert Storm.
"Yet five years after 9/11, police, fire, and other first responders in communities across the country don't have the basic equipment they need to coordinate responses; ports and borders are not secure; and we have veered off-course in the Global War on Terrorism. We need to do better."
As a defense contractor working for U.S. Northern Command - the key agency coordinating military disaster response - Fawcett has provided comprehensive evaluations and assessments of Federal responses to natural and man-made disasters. He says that in order to more effectively prevent and/or mitigate terrorist attacks on the continental United States, its territories and possessions, the federal government needs to:
- Implement the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission Report
- Conduct a Government Accountability Office evaluation of the effectiveness of the Department of Homeland Security and make recommendations for improvement
- Empanel Congressional hearings to determine the results of funding to date of all projects dealing with defense of the homeland.
"A year ago, the 9/11 Commission, an independent, bipartisan commission, issued its report card and gave the federal government failing and mediocre grades," said Fawcett. "Yet few of the reforms and improvements recommended by the Commission - reforms that could save American lives and prevent another terrorist attack on U.S. soil - have been put into law. That's inexcusable."
In addition to strengthening defense of the homeland, policy makers need to refocus The Global War on Terrorism. "We need to get back on course in the Global War on Terrorism," said Fawcett. "We should use all of the tools- military, diplomatic and economic - we have in our arsenal to hunt down the terrorists and kill them."
Fawcett's depth of experience and clear policy insights on disaster planning and other crucial issues have won the support of numerous military leaders, including retired USAF Brigadier General Owen Lentz, former director of intelligence for NORAD. "Jay Fawcett has the skills and ability to assess complex problems and provide reasonable solutions," said Lentz, a CD-5 resident. "It is that ability that we want in our leaders in Congress."
Fawcett's broad appeal - his military background and small business experience - cuts across traditional political boundaries. He has been endorsed by individuals and organizations that represent the needs and wishes of the people of CD-5, including the former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the former Supreme Allied Commander; The Retired Enlisted Association Senior Citizens League, VETPAC, organized labor and a number of leading Republicans in CD-5.

Colorado Springs resident Jay Fawcett is a graduate, former professor, and a former headquarters' squadron commander of the Air Force Academy.
