STAGGER LEE: Bad Man Behind The Myth & Song
On Christmas Night, 1895, in a St. Louis saloon, "Stag" Lee Shelton shot Billy Lyons during an argument over a Stetson Hat. (PRWEB) September 18, 2006 -- On Christmas Eve, 1895, in a St. Louis saloon, "Stag" Lee Shelton shot Billy Lyons during an argument over a Stetson Hat. More than 100 years and as many songs later, Bay Area authors Derek McCulloch and Shepherd Hendrix take an entertaining and bold look at that "Bad Man Behind The Myth & Song" in their new graphic novel, STAGGER LEE.
McCulloch and Hendrix launch a "STAGGER LEE 101" tour at Berkeley's Comic Relief book store on September 30 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., "101" presentation at 7:30 p.m. followed by book signing. Wear a Stetson Hat and win a prize. The authors travel to St. Louis in November for scheduled appearances.
"From the moment I first read the history that inspired the legend, I knew it was a uniquely powerful story just waiting to be told to a new generation," says writer Derek McCulloch. "The songs and legends about Stagger Lee represent a very rich vein of the American experience," says McCulloch. McCulloch's long-time friend and collaborator, graphic artist Shepherd Hendrix, offers up a little practical advice: "Don't touch anyone's hat. Especially if they're mean and packin' heat."
Chances are you've heard about Stagger Lee in one of the many recordings available by artists like Ma Rainey, Mississippi John Hurt, Lloyd Price, Bob Dylan, The Clash, Ike and Tina Turner, and Nick Cave. McCulloch and Hendrix listened to more than 30 renditions for inspiration while writing and drawing their book. STAGGER LEE explores this mythical translation in song handed down over the years. The authors weave together and intricate fictional narrative using available historical record, a twist or two when facts are missing, and a rare social perspective on nineteenth century culture, language, politics and race.
Since its release in May from publisher Image Comics, Inc., STAGGER LEE has garnered critical acclaim from Entertainment Weekly, Publishers Weekly, Miami Herald, St. Louis –Dispatch, Library Journal, grassroots bloggers, and legendary rock critic and historian, Greil Marcus.
