Heard About Increasing Core Strength? New Book, Yoga for the Core, Explains How to Build Strength Without Rigidity

The first book available that outlines core stabilizing techniques found in yoga. Easy to use, spiral bound, perfect for the yoga studio, gym, home or on the road.

Calgary, AB (PRWEB) September 22, 2006 --- Anyone who keeps up with trends in fitness has heard that Yoga is the ticket when it comes to building up the core. Quicker recovery from injuries, relief for back or shoulder pain and improved athletic performance are reputed to follow. However, if one goes and signs up for Yoga classes, it may be next to impossible to figure out which poses are specifically designed to strengthen the core and why they do so. That's where a new book by Suzette O'Byrne, Yoga for the Core: Finding Stability in an Unstable Environment, comes in (www.functionalsynergy.com).

"It's true that Yoga offers the perfect counterpoint to weightlifting, running and aerobics, which tend to contract muscles," says O'Byrne, a kinesiologist and certified Yoga instructor who teaches at the Calgary Yoga studio Functional Synergy. "Yoga lengthens muscles and provides inner stability from the body's power center rather than from peripheral muscle systems. A strong inner core improves overall posture strength and flexibility, and my book explains why."

Yoga lengthens muscles and provides inner stability from the body's power center rather than from peripheral muscle systems. A strong inner core improves overall posture strength and flexibility, and my book explains why.
As Yoga for the Core explains, muscles in the outer core can try to compensate for a weak inner core, but then injuries and bodily dysfunctions may occur. With a strong inner core, people acquire the ease of movement that Yoga is known for -- along with greater stillness as a bonus.

"People can take Yoga for the Core to the gym, lay it on the floor and follow along with the exercises and poses using a series of props that they'll find at any gym," O'Byrne notes. "They'll develop more strength and speed, along with a different approach to breathing. No teacher is necessary."

The book includes more than 65 photos, many diagrams and a step-by-step program that shows how to adapt the exercises to your own capabilities and limits -- something especially useful for those who have had fitness-related injuries in the past. "If it hurts you to exercise, with the proper movements made within your range of motion, Yoga can help you become pain-free," says O'Byrne.

Yoga for the Core: Finding Stability in an Unstable Environment by Suzette O'Byrne, ISBN 0-9738894-1-1, costs $19.99 (Canadian) is being released on September 22, limited copies for pre-release are available now at www.functionalsynergy.com. Bulk rates for the book are available.
