Human Rights Activist to Speak in Parsippany

Rwanda Genocide Survivor and UN Human Rights Activist, Jacqueline Murekatete, slated to give Free Lecture on August 12, 2006 about Genocide in Africa.

Parsippany, NJ (PRWEB) July 25, 2006 -- First Baptist Community Church of Parsippany, New Jersey announced today that it is sponsoring a free lecture on the Rwandan Genocide and parallels in Africa today by UN Human Rights activist, Jacqueline Murekatete. The lecture will be held on Saturday, August 12, 2006 at 800 Vail Road in Parsippany beginning at 7:00 pm.

Ms. Murekatete was the only survivor of her family, at the age of ten, of the Rwandan genocide that occurred in 1994 when the Hutus turned against the Tutsi’s in genocidal vengeance on the death of the Rwandan president. Although CNN carried the news, as well as photos of the millions being slaughtered, neither the UN nor the United States intervened. This failure to act has been cited recently in urgent calls for international intervention in Darfur.

Ms. Murekatete has spoken at the United Nations, before Congress, and has worked with other Human Rights leaders, such as Elie Wiesel. She has also been interviewed on television and has been featured in an award winning documentary film on human rights

The lecture is free, and will be followed by a question and answer period and refreshments. Seating is limited, and therefore the public is urged to arrive early for what is expected to be a standing-room only event.

First Baptist Community Church is an American Baptist Church offering Sunday worship beginning with bible classes for all ages at 9:00 a.m., followed by service at 10:30. First Baptist also offers women’s bible studies, fellowship events, and will be offering Vacation Bible School in August.
