The Big Apple is taking a big bite into online education with the largest number of prospective students seeking online programs, according to eLearners.com. eLearners.com, the leading resource for connecting students with online education, analyzed its database of prospective students and found that the largest metro areas lead the top 10 cities for those seeking an online education. They include:

"One might expect that the largest saturation of those seeking online education would be in America's largest cities," said Andrew Gansler, CEO of eLearners.com. "But remember, these cities also offer the largest selection and availability of campus-based alternatives, so it's encouraging to see online education flourishing in these population centers."
Perhaps even more interesting are the results when adjusted for population. On a per capita basis, the eLearners.com data revealed that the top ranked cities for prospective online learners are:
Top 10 Cities for Online Learning, Per Capita

2. Fort Polk South, LA

8. Ketchikan, AK
9. Warner Robins, GA
10. Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood, TX
Among these ten cities, six serve as the home base or post for members of the United States military. "Online learning is a perfect fit for servicemen and women," said Gansler. "Thousands of members of the military are turning to online education because it offers the flexibility needed to fit their schedule."
Eduventures estimates that at the close of 2005, fully online higher education accounted for 7 percent of all higher education enrollments in the United States (c.1.2 million students). According to a recent survey commissioned by The Sloan Consortium, the number of students enrolled in at least one online course was 3.2 million, up 35 percent over the previous year
