Next Generation of Bluegrass Musicians to Share Chicago Stage

Chicago will hear the sounds of a new generation of bluegrass music when two up-and-coming string bands share the stage. (PRWEB) January 6, 2007 -- Chicago will hear the sounds of a new generation of bluegrass music when two up-and-coming string bands share the stage. Chicago's own Tangleweed joins Michigan's Greensky Bluegrass at Martyr's on Thursday, January 18th, in what promises to be an evening of crackling bluegrass and string band music.

Tangleweed is enjoying rave reviews around the world for their second release, "Where You Been So Long?" (Squatney Records). The CD landed a spot in the Folk Music Airplay Chart's December Top 50 on the strength of two original songs: "Hard Times" and "With a Bottle In My Hand/Farewell Blues". In the few short months since its release, the record has received airplay in over twenty countries on four continents.

Tangleweed's first cd, "Just a Spoonful (and other Folk Songs of Rural Cook County)" was similarly well-received, prompting Sing Out! magazine to declare that Tangleweed "hits on all eight cylinders". The group has also cut a song for a forthcoming volume of the Old Town School of Folk Music Songbook series, slated for a late spring release.

In just over two years, Tangleweed has graduated from coffeehouses to bars to top-notch local venues and festivals. In 2006 the band appeared live on WTTW 11's 'Chicago Tonight' and delivered high-profile sets at regional festivals. Tangleweed has quickly developed a unique and vital sound around a massive repertoire of traditional and original waltzes, breakdowns, and drinking songs, spiked with an occasional Velvet Underground or Rolling Stones cover.

Kalamazoo's Greensky Bluegrass has been touring extensively to promote the release of their own sophomore release, "Tuesday Letter", produced by Tim Carbone from Railroad Earth. The Group followed their championship in the new band competition at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival with a string of shows supporting bluegrass legend Del McCoury.

Local singer-songwriter John Lennox rounds out the bill. Lennox has spent the past year touring extensively in support of his most recent CD, "Into the Bull's Shoulder". Lennox's work has attracted attention from the media in the U.S. and Canada, and has drawn favorable comparisons to Uncle Tupelo and Steve Earle.

Lennox takes the stage at 9:00, Tangleweed follows at 10:00, and Greensky Bluegrass closes out the evening at 11. Cover is $7. Martyrs is located at 3855 N. Lincoln Avenue on Chicago's north side.
