Now in its 23rd year, Langley's Mystery Weekend is the Granddaddy of Murder Mysteries. Held in a quaint village by the sea on an island just north of Seattle, this event draws participants from as far away as England to participate in the solving of the murder.

A murder will soon take place in this quiet village by the sea and there will be scores of detectives competing with one another to solve the mystery. Mystery Weekend in Langley, a small waterfront town on Whidbey Island just north of Seattle, is a diabolical interactive murder mystery held the last weekend of February each year that involves the whole town plus hundreds of visitors as they seek to unravel clues, interview suspicious characters and investigate the scene of the crime.

Now in its 23rd year it is considered the Granddaddy of Whodunits. It attracts people from as far away as England that come each year eagerly anticipating the annual two-day event. "This event is so much fun for everyone involved. The whole town becomes the stage. Shopkeepers and residents become cleverly costumed actors and colorful characters are everywhere you turn," laughs Chamber of Commerce Director Nancy Rowan. "Players interview the characters to try to milk them for clues but they have to be careful since they may be talking with the murderer. They will say anything to keep from being caught and they may lead you down the wrong path," continues Rowan.

Langley is a known writer's enclave and a talented group of local writers gather each fall to craft the mystery. The mysteries are written to appeal to families with tough clues for the adults but enough "silly" thrown in to entertain kids as well. This year's mystery is titled "Death by Chocolate" and with Langley recently becoming home to several chocolate themed businesses; a chocolate shop, a chocolate candle manufacturer and a chocolate themed nursery and gift shop, chocolate will certainly be plentiful throughout the town during the course of the two day event.

Playing this living Clue game is easy, simply pay the $5 fee at the Visitor Information Center (208 Anthes Street) where participants receive a special edition of the Langley Gazette with stories about the crime, photos of the suspects that are scattered throughout this two block village, a map showing the crime scene and locations where clues can be found. So don't be clueless! Join in the fun, don your finest Sherlock Holmes hat and have a date with death ... by chocolate.

Mystery Weekend is February 23rd & 24th. Langley is near the southern tip of Whidbey Island, 40 minutes north of Seattle, reached from the mainland via the Mukilteo-Clinton ferry. For more information contact the Langley Chamber of Commerce 360-221-6765 or
