The actress contenders are Penelope Cruz (Volver), Judi Dench (Notes on a Scandal), Helen Mirren (The Queen), Meryl Streep (The Devil Wears Prada), and Kate Winslet (Little Children).
Last year's winners, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Reese Witherspoon, went on to to take home Oscars, as did Jamie Foxx and Hilary Swank in 2004, and Sean Penn and Charlize Theron in 2003.
E! will tape the 12th annual ceremony, at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, and air it January 20. Oscar nominees will be announced three days later.
