Nashville design powerhouse Tom Ventress can't describe what differentiates a compelling design from a dud, but he's pretty good at creating the difference. The single principal owner of Ventress Design Group recently accepted his 104th industry award with five wins in the renowned Global Corporate Identity 3 Competition, six awards presented by industry standard Graphic Design USA, recognition by Print's Regional Annual and five prizes from Creativity 36. The awards bring to 24 the number of awards won in 2006 by the firm and come on the heels of seven nods in the American Corporate Identity 2007 competition, which focuses on the work of firms within the United States.

Ventress' multinational designs will appear in Global Corporate Identity 3, an annual reference book published by noted international design industry expert David E. Carter and distributed in more than 120 countries worldwide. Winning designs include DigiScript's Trial Trainer Plus sales kit and its ReachMD trademark/logo design and sales kit; the University of Virginia "Rotunda" logo; and a student recruitment brochure for Peabody College of Vanderbilt University.

The full color hardback book focuses on the specific challenges of business design in a multinational community and includes seven categories of corporate design: logos, letterheads, package design, complete identity programs, corporate identity manuals, signage & environmental graphics, and corporate brochures. Approximately 70% of the winning entries are from outside the United States. The American entries are, for the most part, representative of firms that do business outside the United States.

In addition, Ventress has won six American Graphic Design Awards presented by industry standard Graphic Design USA. The entries were published in December in the 300-page Annual that serves as a reference to graphic design professionals and marketing decision makers. Winning entries include "Explore: Frist Center for the Visual Arts," a poster for the Frist Center for the Visual Arts; "Award Winner or Award Whiner?," a poster for the Nashville Advertising Federation; the Vanderbilt University Law School viewbook, a student recruitment brochure; a website design for Act I Theatre Company; a logo for Zia Music Production; and Ventress Design Group's own brochure.

In addition, design magazine Print recently selected Ventress' "Hearing is Believing" design for the Nashville Advertising Federation for inclusion in its Regional Annual, the most comprehensive survey of graphic design in the United States. Winners were selected from more than 20000 entries.

Five of Ventress' pieces were selected from more than 3000 entries in 29 countries for Creativity 36, a 400-page, full-color hardcover distributed worldwide by Harper Collins. The awards marked the fourth consecutive year that Creativity selected Ventress' designs for inclusion. Winners included logos for Community Initiative and the Susan Gray School; "Explore: Frist Center for the Visual Arts" poster for the Frist Center for the Visual Arts; and the Vanderbilt Law School viewbook. In addition, Zia Music Production's Logo won a Silver Award.

The awards number the 104th industry honor Ventress has received. Prior accolades include two silver ADDYs, the Public Relation Society of America's Parthenon Award, twelve recognitions by Global Corporate Identity and awards from Graphis Logo, Creativity, Logo and Print's Best Posters and Billboards, among others.

Since 1999, Ventress Design Group has created award-winning logos, graphic designs and branding programs for leaders in healthcare, education, food packaging, manufacturing, engineering, real estate, insurance, sports, entertainment and aviation. In addition to the current award winners, its clientele has included the World Trade Centers Association-CenTradeX partnership, Griffin Technology, Centerstone and the World Figure Skating Championships.
