British Airways' operation at Heathrow will move into Terminal 5, currently under construction, in March 2008. Terminal Five is a huge project -- the site covers an area of 260 hectares, about the size of London's Hyde Park. The terminal building itself is almost a quarter of a mile long. When Terminal 5 is fully complete in 2011 it will provide Heathrow airport with an additional 60 aircraft stands -- about a quarter of which will house the new Airbus 380.
Thirty million British Airways passengers pass through London Heathrow each year. Numbers are expected to increase by 27 million annually as a result of this development. Demand for air travel in the south-east is expected to double in the next 20 years. Passenger numbers could escalate to 90 million travellers a year using Heathrow by 2027.
The expansion at Heathrow means that facilities such as airport hotels will be in increasing demand.
