Handybar® - a simple disability product which helps people get in and out of cars - was invented not by an engineer or entrepreneur, but by a man recovering from knee surgery. It has now won several awards and been verified effective by scientific studies.
Reflecting on an invention that is providing assistance to people worldwide brings considerable satisfaction.
Ian Stewart, the inventor of the Handybar®, found himself unable to get into his vehicle to get to work following surgery on both knees. It was a critical time as he was the main breadwinner for his young family. His solution was to invent the Handybar.
The success of his patented Handybar mobility aid is evident: Handybar has won awards, been endorsed by scientists, is now being exported to over twenty countries.
It has been a long journey, which started in a garage off a coastal road on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. There have been many ups and downs on the road to where Ian and his company, Avenue Innovations Inc. (AI), are today.
AI has been the proud recipient of four major US Trade Show awards for 'Best New Product'. Visitors from all over the world have stopped at the AI booth to enquire about distributorships. There are now exclusive distributorships in the European Union (Handybar Europa BV) and Australia (Living Made Easy) and others are under negotiation including in the USA which, of course, is already a major market for this remarkably effective mobility aid.
Researchers at both the University of Massachusetts Boston and the Cleveland Clinic confirmed Handybar's effectiveness in helping the elderly or otherwise mobility-challenged get in and out of cars.
How does this simple, compact disability product work? The Handybar is a very strong, lightweight aluminum portable handle with a non-slip, comfortable Pantene medical-type grip that fits securely into the vehicle striker plate. The striker plate is the rugged 'U' shaped rod, located on each door post, into which the door latches. It is especially strong as it was designed to withstand side impact of a collision. It can easily support the weight of a person bearing down on it to get themselves into their vehicle or, conversely, to push themselves up out of it.
The Handybar also incorporates a window breaker and a child-proof seatbelt cutter, making it an effective emergency vehicle escape device.
Many letters have been received from enthusiastic users, testifying to the difference that the Handybar® had made to the quality of their lives. For sample letters, see Handybar testimonials. Handybar has restored their sense of dignity and independence in that they no longer have to rely on others, risking injury to themselves or to their helpers, to assist them in and out of their vehicles. The mobility device can be used on all doors making it also suitable for passengers.
