CleverSet, the leading provider of merchandise recommendations services, today announced that Barry Gilbert, former CEO of Smith & Hawken and former COO of Sharper Image, will join the CleverSet board of directors. Gilbert is the latest addition to CleverSet's impressive team of executives and advisors that includes advisory board members Dr. Peter Norvig, director of research for Google, and Dr. Andreas Weigend, former chief scientist of Amazon.com.
Barry Gilbert is a 30-year veteran of the retail industry with extensive Internet retail experience. Most recently, he was CEO of Smith & Hawken, a luxury garden products multi-channel retailer. During his tenure, Smith & Hawken was successfully sold to the Scotts Miracle Gro Company. Prior to joining Smith & Hawken, he served as CEO of luxury products retailer Miadora, Inc, a Sequoia Capital-funded online retailer based in San Mateo. Before that he served as COO of The Sharper Image where he quadrupled the stock price over three years. In 1990, he launched the first Warner Bros. Studio Stores and opened over 100 stores in the U.S. and internationally. He has also held prior executive merchandising and operational positions at both Federated and May department stores.
"For online retailers, acquiring new customers is an increasingly expensive proposition, and now more than ever they are looking for ways to maximize conversion and see significant revenue lift," said Barry Gilbert, board member of CleverSet. "CleverSet's proprietary technology has consistently delivered revenue per visitor increases of 20% or more. As a former retailer, I look forward to helping CleverSet meet the needs of their customers in the highly competitive online retail marketplace."
CleverSet also announced that it has raised $2 million in funding. With this latest round of funding, CleverSet has raised a total of $3.8 million that includes an initial $500,000 grant from the National Science Foundation. CleverSet will use the funds to extend the reach of its sophisticated merchandise recommendations technology to top online retailers.
"In a short period of time, CleverSet has been able to attract significant interest in our technology and has assembled a world-class team of advisors," said Todd Humphrey, CEO of CleverSet. "Barry brings unparalleled experience and vision to our mission to deliver a superior online shopping experience that benefits both companies and consumers. As retailers embrace personalization as one of the key business imperatives for 2007, CleverSet is ready with the technology, team and resources to lead the market and deliver quantifiable success."
Developed by Dr. Bruce D'Ambrosio, emeritus faculty professor at Oregon State University, CleverSet's technology has its origins in artificial intelligence and was originally funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation. Instead of using static rules, CleverSet's powerful analytic platform uses statistical and relational models that incorporate data from multiple sources, including clickstream data, stored customer information, product catalog details and purchase history, to generate highly relevant merchandise recommendations.
Already used by over 60 e-commerce companies such as Alpineer and Overstock.com, CleverSet's recommendations technology allows retailers to entice online shoppers with relevant and appealing items they might not have otherwise seen, creating a more personalized shopping experience and resulting in revenue lift per user per session of 20% or more.
