Virtualization--the technique of managing systems and resources functionally, regardless of their physical layout or location--creates a pool of resources from which IT services can be delivered.
"Virtualization and consolidation can produce significant return on investment when implemented in a systematic approach with appropriate planning and due-diligence up front," says Schmidt, a veteran of hundreds of consolidation projects across multiple industries and multiple platforms that have saved clients millions of dollars.
We find that in many cases, corporate assets are significantly under-utilized in the typical Fortune 500 enterprise, notes Schmidt, one of three industry experts selected to participate in the panel.
Schmidt will present a case study demonstrating how one company, over five years, could reduce the total cost of ownership for its IT environment by over 30 percent from a current level projected at $13 million.
But successful virtualization and consolidation projects require a serious commitment, Schmidt warns.
"If you're not willing to conduct due diligence, implement a solid methodology, and follow through seriously, an enterprise-wide consolidation effort will probably fall short of return on investment expectations." Schmidt says. "The most important criterion for success is stakeholder involvement from the beginning. Key IT, financial, and business unit executives must see this as an important initiative to reduce costs and streamline operations and put their support behind it. If not, the initiative and potential ROI is at risk.
Prior to joining the consolidation and virtualization practice at Logicalis, Schmidt worked for 25 years in senior-level sales management positions with industry leaders Avnet Enterprise Solutions and Digital.
