His name is Mark, and he is a compulsive overeater. June 14, 2005, surgeons performed Gastric Bypass. Now after eighteen months of recovery, and over 350 pounds lost, Mark Smith launches his website,, to help others.

Obesity survivor Mark Smith, launches his web site,, to aid others in their recovery from compulsive over-eating, body issues, weight loss, and gastric bypass surgery. Mr. Smith underwent gastric bypass surgery to begin the weight loss. However, he recognizes that his overeating was indicative of an over-indulging that manifested itself throughout his life. Gastric bypass surgery is not a panacea. Losing weight physically was never achievable until he lost weight mentally. His recovery from compulsive overeating is a day-to-day journey.

Mr. Smith is now the spokesman for Hillcrest Hospital's Weightloss Surgery program. He is a frequent speaker to community groups and available for other bookings. His painfully honest story resonates with his audiences.

Obesity is the largest preventable epidemic in America. The website,, is equally honest, self-deprecating, and a humorous expansion upon Mark's story. "Through overcoming my own adversities, I am far more capable of empathizing with the struggles of others than if I had been thin my whole life. If you are struggling with an eating disorder, have body image issues, are scared, feel out of control or are trying to live day to day -- you are not alone. I've been there. I live day to day. You can find inner strength. It takes time. Having learned to accept and love myself as I am, I now know that love handles all."

In addition to the writing's on his site, Mr. Smith is finishing a book after his life-long struggle with food.
