Denver, CO (PRWEB) February 6, 2007 -- The Denver Fencing Center welcomes the 2007 Junior Olympics to Colorado. The event, which is sponsored by the US Fencing Association, is free and open to the public. It will take place from February 16th to the 19th at the Denver Convention Center, Hall A. Eleven Denver Fencing Center Students have qualified for the competition, which will feature athletes from many NCAA fencing programs as well as several Olympic hopefuls.

"The Junior Olympics is the premier event of the year for youth fencers aged thirteen to twenty, and qualifying eleven fencers is a new record for our club," remarked DFC head coach Nathan Anderson. "Our athletes have trained all year for this opportunity, the fact that the Junior Olympics are being held here in Denver makes it extra special."

The Junior Olympics features twelve events, encompassing fencing's three weapons: foil, epee, and saber, with separate men's and women's events. Over 1600 fencers are expected to compete, including athletes from NCAA fencing programs. The field includes national and world champions that are expected to vie for spots on the 2008 Olympic fencing team.

The Denver Fencing Center invites people to come cheer on local fencers and experience the excitement of the sport. "Spectators can expect to see over fourty concurrent bouts during peak hours of the tournament," continued Anderson. "Fencing moves fast and bouts are scored electronically, so everyone can follow the action."

Fencers will compete in three weapons: foil, fencing's primary training weapon, epee, the descendant of the dueling sword, and sabre, the modern version of the slashing cavalry sword. Fencing events will be going on from 8 am to 6pm daily. For more event information, please visit www.usfencing.org.
