MGH Institute of Health Professions Appoints Interim Academic Dean
Dr. Kevin P. Kearns named Interim Academic Dean during Presidential transition.
(PRWEB) February 7, 2007 -- Kevin P. Kearns, CCC-SLP, PhD, has been appointed Interim Academic Dean of the MGH Institute of Health Professions effective February 1, 2007. He succeeds Dr. Mary Carey, who served as the Institute's first academic dean from 1998 until her retirement last month.
President Ann W. Caldwell, who recently announced her own departure after serving as president for ten years, named Dr. Kearns as interim dean while a national search for her successor is conducted.
"Dr. Kearns has demonstrated outstanding leadership as a member of the Institute's senior management team for the past seven years and brings to his new role both the vision and experience to sustain and advance our academic mission," said President Caldwell.
Professor Kearns has been Director of the Graduate Program in Communication Sciences and Disorders since 1999. His research interests include rehabilitation for brain-damaged patients with speech-language and communication disorders such as aphasia and, developing and testing novel treatment options for aphasia-related disorders. Dr. Kearns has been recognized for his clinical and research contributions to the Veteran's Administration Medical Centers with a VAMC Special Commendation, and he entered the "Hall of Fame" of Speech-Language Pathology of the Department of Veterans Affairs in 2002.
Dr. Kearns serves on the board of the Brain Rehabilitation Research Center, located at the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center in Gainesville, Florida, and the American Speech-Language Hearing Association Publications Board. In addition, Dr. Kearns is a Fellow of the American Speech Language Hearing Association. He is a board certified member of the Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders and Sciences (ANCDS) and he is a member of the Academy of Aphasia.
Dr. Kearns graduated with a BA in Speech-Language Pathology from the State University of New York at Buffalo, earned his MA in Communication Disorders from Saint Louis University, and a PhD in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Kansas.
