Re: Virgin Earth Challenge: A Counteroffer from Planktos to Join the Voyage of Recovery
A congratulatory announcement to Sir Richard Branson reporting that the climate-cooling technology his $25 million prize is supposed to provoke into existence already in fact exists, and inviting him to come aboard the first ocean voyage where it will be deployed.
San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) February 10, 2007 -- Planktos applauds Sir Richard Branson's creation of the Virgin Earth Challenge prize to spark innovation of solutions to preserve and protect our environment. However, as much as we appreciate his brilliant initiative, and anticipated future backing (since we hope to win the award), we would first prefer to avail ourselves of his physical back as well. We invite him to join us aboard the Planktos Research Ship Weatherbird II as she embarks upon her Voyage of Recovery next month to deliver the very solution he desires.
Together we will begin a series of plankton restoration pilot projects that demonstrate the most powerful and affordable tool at hand to reduce atmospheric CO2 and heal the oceans as well. We promise a comfortable bunk, toothsome meals with a colorful crew, and long hard hours on deck bending our collective backs to the task of saving this blue planet. If Planktos should indeed win his marvelous award, we ask him to pass the prize money on to any charity that will help the world's disadvantaged kids learn new ways to preserve, protect and restore our planet when their turn comes.
The Planktos mission is to undertake global scale ecorestoration projects in partnership with Mother Nature. We do this by restoring our seas and trees, and turning atmospheric CO2 into healthy and life sustaining ecosystems. The fossil fuel age has taken a terrible toll on our ocean plankton in particular, and they are now annually removing 3~4 billion fewer tonnes of CO2 from the air than they did just 25 years ago. In other words, returning our ocean plankton to 1980 levels of health would remove half of all our manmade emissions each year, or more than five times the reductions called for in the Kyoto Protocol and more than three times his own desired results.
In a few weeks time, Planktos will also begin planting millions of trees on new lands that will become our "Climate Parks Program" in the national parks of the European Union. Simultaneously, our ship R/V Weatherbird II will begin the first in a series of ocean ecorestoration pilot projects aimed at replenishing ocean micronutrients and fostering ocean plankton recovery. Through this twin effort fossil fuel-derived CO2 will not only be removed from the atmosphere, it will be put to good ecological use in our restored trees and seas. A significant portion of that new biomass becomes sequestered for centuries and yields saleable carbon credits, the new currency of the global effort to save our environment.
We therefore request Sir Branson to join us in this historic effort and hasten the day the entire planet can enjoy the fruits of his own prize.
