Seattle Mom to Receive National Award from Condé Nast's Cookie Magazine

Heidi Breeze-Harris is the Smart Cookie Awards people's choice winner for her work with One By One, a nonprofit committed to ending obstetric fistula worldwide.

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) February 15, 2007 -- One By One, a nonprofit organization committed to ending obstetric fistula worldwide, today announced that co-founder Heidi Breeze-Harris has been selected by Condé Nast's Cookie magazine as one of the recipients of its first annual Smart Cookie Awards, which recognize, celebrate, and support mothers who are working to make the world a better place. As the people's choice winner elected by visitors to cookiemag.com, Heidi Breeze-Harris will be honored along with other notable mothers at a gala event in New York City this April and featured in a special editorial profile in the May/June issue of Cookie.

Heidi Breeze-Harris co-founded One By One in 2005 and has since helped the young organization raise over $250,000 to combat obstetric fistula. Obstetric fistula, a devastating childbirth injury caused by unrelieved obstructed labor, affects women and girls living in poverty in the developing world. Fistula is both preventable and treatable; on average, fistula repair surgery costs a mere $300. One By One contributes to the elimination of obstetric fistula worldwide by engaging the public and supporting those who work to treat and prevent fistula in the developing world.

Heidi Breeze-Harris has become a respected advocate on the issue of obstetric fistula and has traveled to Ethiopia on a fact-finding mission to learn about the intersection between child marriage and fistula in the East African country. Breeze-Harris has also inspired thousands of people across the United States - from high school students to politicians - to play a role in eliminating fistula.

"Heidi chose to take on an important issue outside of her personal experience and shine a light on it," says Cookie's editor-in-chief Pilar Guzmán. "We really admire her efforts to help women and girls in developing countries--all while balancing the day-to-day challenges of being a mom."

Shaleece Haas, One By One program director and co-founder of the Fistula Foundation, adds, "Heidi's passion is infectious. She has truly begun to change the way people see their role in fixing global health problems around the world. Talk with her for twenty minutes and you're ready to drop everything and join her in the effort to end fistula forever."
