Artifactuality Debuts MapMastery: World’s 1st Source of Broadcast Map Design, Training, Implementation Solutions

Time-Saving Techniques Culled from Real World Expertise Now Accessible to Network, Cable and Local Station Newsrooms

NEW YORK (PRWEB) February 13, 2007 -- With attractive, accurate maps playing an increasingly important role in today’s on-air environment, broadcast design firm Artifactuality announced that it has introduced MapMastery (www.mapmastery.com), the world’s first comprehensive set of mapping solutions for today’s fast-paced newsrooms.

Created to bring much higher levels of efficiency and creativity to art departments and engineering staffs, Artifactuality’s proven design, training and implementation techniques raise on-air maps to their highest potential. Spearheaded by Emmy Award-winning motion graphics artist Robert Mickens, MapMastery is an advanced approach to creating highly compelling broadcast maps at top speed.

Whether they’re being used to report on global developments or local breaking news, maps are by far one of the most useful information sources on television
Mickens designed MapMastery after securing a reputation as the map “go-to” guy for CNN, MSNBC, WPIX, WWOR, FOX5 and many more. “Whether they’re being used to report on global developments or local breaking news, maps are by far one of the most useful information sources on television,” says Mickens, Co-Founder/Creative Director of Artifactuality. “The dramatic visuals and detail that maps provide, on everything from Middle East combat to traffic jams and weather, often serve as the crucial starting point for a well-reported story."

“Despite the critical importance of leading-edge map visuals to a broadcaster’s on-air look and competitiveness, a great deal of networks and stations often find that maps have their own daunting set of challenges. In response, Artifactuality has drawn together our extensive real-world experience to create MapMastery, an advanced set of mapping solutions that are easy to implement and save valuable time in the newsroom.”

MapMastery was born when Mickens, a highly experienced motion graphics artist with a natural enthusiasm for geography, noticed that many broadcast art departments had not been able to develop highly trained personnel or proper organizational procedures for maps as they rushed constantly to air. To help a station he was freelancing at to deal with the whirlwind, Mickens devised an innovative workflow and filing system that made large map files immediately available to the department. Furthermore, even artists with little knowledge of the mapping software could use Mickens’ system to finish the maps with up-to-the-minute detail.

After several more years of field R&D, Mickens and Artifactuality Co-Founders/Creative Director Christine Moh have honed MapMastery into a highly intuitive package of map design, training and implementation solutions that ensures maximum return on newsrooms’ mapping system investments. MapMastery is also software-agnostic, utilizing any preferred combination of Curious Software, Vizrt and Google Earth as the platform.

Artifactuality are available to bring the time-saving benefits of MapMastery to network, cable and local stations throughout the US and Canada with on-site training, implementation and support. The Artifactuality team also provides short-notice troubleshooting and regularly scheduled updates for mapping systems.

“Maps have incredible visual power – they often open and close a newscast, but their creation can be a huge source of stress behind the scenes,” Robert Mickens concludes. “MapMastery opens up a fast new world of attractive and creative broadcast maps, by making them friendly to the artists who use them every day.”
