Wellesley Hills, MA and Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) February 15, 2007 -- Specialists on Call (SOC), Inc., formerly known as Brain Saving Technologies (BST), Inc., is a physician led, JCAHO accredited Hospital Services Company providing outsourced, cost effective specialty physician consultations to hospital emergency departments and in-patient units via a state of the art telemedicine and videoconferencing system. This change in name reflects a broadening of the company's focus beyond neurology and stroke consultations to include other specialty physician consultations as well.

Joe Peterson, MD, and newly appointed CEO, commented, "Our success and growth in providing our teleneurology service to urban, suburban and rural hospitals over the past two years is a testament to our ability to effectively address the need for specialty physicians to come urgently to the bedside, 24/7. We have demonstrated that our model benefits all members of the healthcare experience: patients see a great specialist quickly; hospitals save on the costs of specialty coverage; and specialists can focus upon the success of their core practices. In direct response to demand from out clients, we have expanded our scope from stroke to neurology, and expect our scope to reach beyond neurology in the future."

The shortage of specialists available to hospitals is reaching crisis proportions. Across the country, three quarters of emergency departments report a shortage of available specialists like neurologists and orthopedists, according to a 2006 survey by the American College of Emergency Physicians. The Joint Commission (JCAHO), hospitals' credentialing body, has cited lack of specialists as the cause of 21 percent of emergency department "sentinel events" - unexpected deaths of serious injuries due to slow treatment. In the absence of available specialists patients are the first losers; hospitals also suffer an impact on financial performance and liability. All forecasts agree that this circumstance will only worsen as the population ages.

Today SOC provides emergency neurological consultation in a number of hospitals throughout the country with a special emphasis on emergency stroke care. Stroke is the 3rd largest killer of adults and never has medicine had more treatment options for emergency stroke, and at the same time, qualified emergency neurologists are in very short supply. SOC is based in Wellesley Hills, MA, and Los Angeles. www.specialistsoncall.com
