BlogCatalog.com, One of the Internet's Premiere Blog Directories, Delivers Valuable Blog Search Results with its New Search Algorithm

(PRWEB) February 17, 2007 -- With over 100 million blogs on the Internet, a major challenge faced by blog directories is to organize and categorize blogs in a way that makes them readily accessible and useful to people searching them. Given the quantum increase in the number of blogs, BlogCatalog.com, one of the Internet's premiere blog directories, has taken the approach that quality far outweighs quantity when it comes to enabling us to find interesting, relevant, fun and entertaining blogs.

On January 23rd, Blog Catalog was acquired by San Antonio-based SiteProPlus.com. The new owners of BlogCatalog have moved quickly to redo their index of over 65,000 blogs. In a couple of weeks, and many hours of programming, they have turned BlogCatalog into a highly useful resource for blog readers and bloggers.

"When we acquired BlogCatalog.com," says Angie Alaniz, CEO of BlogCatalog, "we saw great value in the over 64,183 blogs already in the index and the over 600 blogs that are submitted daily for inclusion. The challenge we faced was the blog index was unfriendly to blog readers. It was very difficult to locate relevant blogs for a particular search. Our first goal therefore was to make the index useful to search. And we didn't want to waste any time doing this."

To achieve this goal, BlogCatalog implemented a hybrid blog ranking system that combines human editing and review of listings with a new ranking algorithm. "The results have been fantastic," continues Alaniz. "When we first purchased BlogCatalog you'd have to page through many blogs before getting to the jewels. Now when you search BlogCatalog the cream of the blogs are starting to rise to the top. The process is an organic one and we will continue to improve the blog ranking algorithm. I am amazed however at how much fun and interesting it is to to search through all the blogs."

To make the blog index more useful to searches, BlogCatalog has introduced new ways to search the index. This makes sense, given the fact that depending on our mood and the purpose of our search, we approach search differently. If we are browsing blogs for leisure we are probably not in as much of a hurry compared to when we are searching for a news or business item. Accordingly, BlogCatalog now provides users with a number of different ways to get at the blogs. Visitors can now search the BlogCatalog using a traditional search box, via category listing, as well as search by language and country, or they can take an entirely different route and view blogs based on tags assigned to them by their owners.

Alaniz concludes that, "Our goal at BlogCatalog.com is to be the best in breed blog search engine, one that delivers our users with high quality, relevant blogs. We are an idea driven organization and currently exploring the idea of opening up the index to editors and programmers from around the world. Whatever happens,we are only at the beginning stages of redefining BlogCatalog's position in the blogosphere."
