Michigan Artist Commemorates New Lighthouse Heritage Act -- Kerrie Shiel Launches the Michigan Lighthouse Series of Oil Paintings
The first six paintings in the series showcase three of the Keweenaw Peninsula's historic lighthouses -- Eagle Harbor, Copper Harbor, and Jacobsville -- and are now available at the Vertin Gallery, Calumet, Michigan.
Lake Linden, MI (PRWEB) February 18, 2007 -- Recently, Michigan Upper Peninsula artist Kerrie Shiel launched a new series of oil-on-canvas paintings honoring the state's proud heritage of historic lighthouses. The first six paintings in her Michigan Lighthouse series are available at the popular Vertin Gallery in Calumet, Michigan, located on the Keweenaw Peninsula, home to 13 of Michigan's picturesque lighthouses.
President George W. Bush recently signed into law the Michigan Lighthouse and Maritime Heritage Act providing funding to evaluate, promote, and preserve these historic landmarks. As noted by Senator Debbie Stabenow, the act's sponsor, "Michigan's lighthouses are central to our heritage and our economy."
The initial paintings in Shiel's series showcase three of the Keweenaw Peninsula's notable lighthouses--those situated at Eagle Harbor, Copper Harbor, and Jacobsville (the original south entry lighthouse for the Portage Lake Canal)--with more underway. These paintings may be viewed online at MichiganLighthouseArt.com, along with information about the original paintings and available prints. The prints are published by Lake Linden's Slipdown Mountain Publications LLC.
About her new series of paintings, Kerrie Shiel says, "I have endeavored to combine today's familiar images of these popular landmarks with how they may have appeared decades ago."
The Michigan Lighthouse Series expands Shiel's current body of work that includes a collection of aviation artwork available at FlyingArtwork.com and her popular Cessna Warbirds Series at CessnaWarbirds.com/gallery. Last year, the Experimental Aircraft Association selected one of her Cessna Warbirds Series paintings for display in the AirVenture Museum in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, where it can be seen through May 2007.
