Long Beach, CA (PRWEB) February 21, 2007 -- Every Kick Ain't Down by Jane Johnson is now available.

Book Excerpt:
"Suddenly the silence of the house was interrupted by slow moving footsteps. No one was supposed to be home with me. Nervously I got out the hot tub, grabbed my robe. I was really afraid! Just as I slid the glass patio door open, I was startled! It was Brian coming through the patio doorway. He walked right past me and sat down without a word. I was shocked; it was a weekday, a work day he never missed work! Worse his frown, bloodshot eyes, uncombed hair, untucked, rumpled shirt told me something was horribly wrong.

'What's wrong?'

The silence of the room was deafening. He raised his head, looked at me, his brown eyes filled with water as he began to shake and sob uncontrollably.

'What the hell's the matter?' I yelled my heart pounding.

'Well...' he began to tell me all the things I feared and denied for so long. He admitted he had a girlfriend with whom he had two children. But that was not even the worst by a long shot!"

Every Kick Ain't Down the main character, Al Howard, similar to Sherlock Holmes' Dr. Watson, a career driven, African American business woman becomes involved in capturing the brutal murderer of her husband's girlfriend and locating his two illegitimate, kidnapped children.

This mystery is set in the ghetto. Grandmother, a Sherlock Holmes type, a heroic wheelchair-bound older woman and best friend to Al, different ages and backgrounds through a set of circumstances meet and become confidantes. Other characters include Al's husband, Brian, misguided, Michael; a young, streetwise, former gang member turned detective and friend of Grandmother he pulled himself up by his boot straps then meets and marries the City Coroner. Intrigue and abuse by local politicians at City Hall are uncovered and reported by V.G., a sassy newspaper reporter, trying to climb up the career ladder. She gets involved in chasing the murderer and meets Mac the flip side of Michael though Michael and Mac grew up together Mac is an "O.G.", the elder statesman for the gang but V.G.'s motto: "A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do."

In the final chapters, the two children are found. In an unbelievable twist the murderer is apprehended by Al and Grandmother and gets the gas chamber. Tony, another gang member, who tried a double cross, is given a deal by the District Attorney. V.G. gets her story and a spot on the 6 o'clock T.V. news. Al matures from a wimpy, no boundary setting women to a strong woman, her marriage, however, is still undecided.
