AlgaeCal Calcium Supplement Study is Turning Heads by Reversing Bone Loss

In April of 2006 an independent clinical study was launched to study the effectiveness of the AlgaeCal Bone Health Program. Early results from the study are turning heads with evidence of reversing bone loss, and increasing bone mineral density in postmenopausal women.

San Antonio TX (PRWEB) February 22, 2007 -- In April of 2006 an independent clinical study was launched to study the effectiveness of a plant sourced calcium supplement included in the AlgaeCal Bone Health Program. Early results from the study are turning heads with evidence of reversing bone loss, and increasing bone mineral density in postmenopausal women.

Integrative Health Technologies Inc of San Antonio, Texas is handling the clinical study involving 400 participants and will measure several outcomes including bone growth, arthritis scores, PSM scores, and more. The study involves testing at 90 days, six months and one year.

a preliminary analyses of postmenopausal women who have completed their 6-month tests had an annualized increase in BMD (bone mineral density) of 1.4%, instead of the predicted -1.0 % suggesting an annualized net gain over expected of 2.4%.
The latest 180 day report stated that "a preliminary analyses of postmenopausal women who have completed their 6-month tests had an annualized increase in BMD (bone mineral density) of 1.4%, instead of the predicted -1.0 % suggesting an annualized net gain over expected of 2.4%." Study supervisor, Dr. Gilbert Kaats, cautions that these numbers are only representative of 25% of the study population and are subject to change by the time the all participants have completed their tests.

CEO of AlgaeCal International, Dean Neuls says "these early results are very interesting because typically clinical studies involving calcium supplements and postmenopausal women have only been able to slow bone loss, but we are actually growing bone - that is to say increasing bone density."

The AlgaeCal Bone Health Program was put together in response to the U.S. Surgeon General's Bone Health Report. In the report, the Surgeon issued a "call to action" to develop bone-health programs based on three principles: (1) improved nutrition including increased intakes of calcium and vitamin D, (2) increased exercise, and (3) bone health literacy.

Neuls says "The study design has successfully incorporated the three components of the Surgeon General's call to action - increased physical activity with a pedometer program, improved nutrition with a plant based calcium supplement enhanced with high levels of vitamin D3, vitamin K2, plus a new bone building mineral, strontium citrate, and a proven program for increasing physical activity that went beyond just encouraging exercise."

There is considerable evidence within scientific literature, suggesting that taking plant-based nutrients close to their natural form may be more beneficial than taking manufactured products. And there is a great deal of evidence to suggest that calcium, vitamin D, vitamin K2 and strontium can make significant contributions to bone health and become a possible osteoporosis treatment. If these preliminary results continue through to the end of the study, we will have evidence suggesting that the combination is considerably more effective than regular calcium and vitamin D supplementation.
