Debt Affecting Lives at Home and Work, According to Survey

The Debt Counsellors Annual UK Debt Survey 2007 reveals that personal debt problems are having an adverse effect on people's home lives and effectiveness at work.

(PRWEB) February 26, 2007 -- The Debt Counsellors Annual UK Debt Survey 2007 reveals that personal debt problems are having an adverse effect on people's home lives and effectiveness at work.

The survey from debt help experts The Debt Counsellors polled people seeking help for their debt problems, and the results throw a revealing light on the disruptive effect that personal debt can have on people's day-to-day lives.

The survey shows that personal debt affects more than just someone's bank balance. Debts can have far-reaching effects on someone's life at home and at work.
As many as 45.8% said they were less effective at work as a direct result of their personal debt, 22.7% said their financial troubles had caused them to take time off work and 10.9% had experienced continued unemployment.

Personal lives have also suffered due to debt: 28% said their debt problems have resulted in a worse sex life, 33.9% blamed their debts for the breakdown in a relationship with a partner and 10% said their poor finances had caused separation or divorce.

Personal debt is affecting domestic situations in other ways, with 21.4% admitting they are spending less time with their children because of their debt and 25.1% saying they are seeing less of their partner for the same reason.

The results show further evidence of a debt crisis in the UK, with the nation's personal debt total now more than £1.28 trillion and increasing by £1 million every four minutes.

John Porter, a senior counsellor with The Debt Counsellors, said: "The survey shows that personal debt affects more than just someone's bank balance. Debts can have far-reaching effects on someone's life at home and at work."

On a more positive note, Porter adds: "Debt solutions do exist, even for serious cases, and anyone worried about their personal debt should get professional advice to find out about the options available rather than allow their financial problems to disrupt relationships and work."
