Today marks the release of the book, "The Rally Board", a true story about a how a small whiteboard used to capture only positive events caught the attention of people all over the world and helped a family survive the emotional and physical struggles of their baby daughter's three open-heart surgeries.
"The Rally Board", an 80-page paperback book complete with color diagrams of various heart configurations, photographs, illustrations, and charts, is the actual account of the challenges a family faced through several pediatric cardiac surgeries and procedures over the course of nearly three years. It describes how the family's focus on positive events leads to the creation of "The Rally Board" which started on a small whiteboard in a Cardiac Intensive Care Unit bed space. Over time, The Rally Board details made their way to people all over the world through email and eventually a website, drawing tremendous emotional support from family, friends, colleagues, and even strangers.
The book closes with a nurse's perspective written by one of the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit nurses who cared for the Sasena's daughter.
One of the goals of the book's author, Ed Sasena, is to make available to parents just learning of their child's medical condition another success story. "As we look to others for success stories to give us encouragement for our family's future, I hope that our experience can provide the same for others," says Sasena.
In addition, all profits from the sale of "The Rally Board" book are being donated to Children's Hospital Boston. "It's always wonderful to hear success stories about children who have been through such medical trauma," says The Children's Hospital Trust President, Jan Cady. "We do whatever we can to support efforts like, "The Rally Board" book because we know how important it is to bring hope to those families who are about to go through what the Sasena's did."
"Every year, nearly 40,000 newborns are diagnosed with a congenital heart defect," added Dr. Frank Cecchin, a pediatric cardiologist at Children's and the head of the American Heart Association's Cardiovascular Disease in the Young Committee in the Greater Boston Area. "As the source of nearly $11 million in funding for heart disease and stroke research in the young, the American Heart Association applauds the Sasena's efforts to share their story--and bring hope to the countless families that are affected by congenital heart defects every year."
Along with the release of the book comes the launch of the eRallyBoard (http://www.erallyboard.com) website intended to provide additional means of support for families facing pediatric surgery. The eRallyBoard features a blog through which ideas, answers, and support related to life before, during and after pediatric surgery can be shared amongst interested families and friends. In addition, the site provides important links to various research efforts that are directly related to the advancement of pediatric cardiac procedures.
"The Rally Board" book sells for $14.95 (plus tax, shipping and handling). All profits will be donated to Children's Hospital Boston. http://www.eRallyBoard.com is currently the sole channel through which the book is being sold.
